Nantucket PFAS Well Project

A collaborative project to provide PFAS screening tests to Nantucket residents.

The Nantucket PFAS Well Project is pleased to offer a pilot private well testing program for Nantucket residents concerned that “forever chemicals” have contaminated their drinking water. This first-of-its-kind program is designed to empower residents, regardless of their financial situation, to assess their wells and take appropriate measures if there is an indication of the presence of PFAS in their tap water.

Project partners include the Nantucket Land and Water Council, the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the University of Notre Dame, Westfield Residents Advocating for Themselves (WRAFT), and the Nantucket PFAS Action Group.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Nantucket PFAS Well Project – a community-driven initiative that unites researchers, non-profit groups, and concerned residents to address a critical need for private well owners regarding PFAS information.

With over 14,000 PFAS compounds recognized by the EPA, most commercial tests only target 70, leaving many undiscovered in drinking water. Studies show that regulatory testing often falls short in assessing the full spectrum of PFAS present, emphasizing the necessity for a comprehensive screening method.

As state and national PFAS drinking water standards come into effect, private well owners face the burden of costly testing with limited resources to navigate this complex challenge. With the Nantucket PFAS Well Project, we recognized the urgency for a cost-effective screening method, empowering homeowners with the latest information for informed decisions.

We are excited to introduce a groundbreaking well testing method pioneered by Dr. Graham Peaslee and his team at Notre Dame University. Our approach offers affordable testing to determine water contamination and suitable measures, surpassing the limitations of previous programs.

To assist the community in interpreting results and taking further action, we provide clear guidance and comprehensive resources on suitable filters and additional testing options.

Join us on this mission to provide accessible knowledge and affordable solutions, enabling every homeowner to take charge of their well-being and environment. Together, we strive to create a safer and healthier community for all. Your water quality matters, and the Nantucket PFAS Well Project empowers you with vital information.

Why We Are Testing?

There is known PFAS contamination on the island. Private well owners need to know if they need to take any steps to protect themselves and their families from PFAS exposure.

Many communities are exposed to PFAS in their drinking water and testing may be prohibitively expensive for them.

Participating in this project will help determine if this chemical analysis method can serve as an easy, low-cost PFAS screening method.  A low-cost screening option will increase access for low-income and environmental justice communities to information about their drinking water quality.
